First thing we did was do a work sheet where we looked at some made up characters and stereotyped them to what films they would like by a small paragraph that they had describing them.

What is “Genre”?

The word Genre means “type” or “kind”.

In relation to film, Genre becomes a means by which groups of films can be distinguished from one another.

Stereotyping and genre

Below you will see four stereotypical teens, they each will be having their friends round to watch a few films this weekend. Taking the information provided and your own knowledge complete the handout to tell me which genre of films they will be watching, why, and give some examples.

My name is Raven Nightshadow, I enjoy practicing dark magic, Death metal music and playing computer games such as Resident Evil, silent hill and Castlevania. 

Genre: Horror, psychological thriller

Why?: I think that she would like these genres because of the things she does and Games she plays e.g. The silent Hill games or there to scare you and psychologically mess with your mind. Also the silent hill franchise and Resident evil franchise have lots of films.

Suggested films: Silent hill, Silent hill Revelation, Silent hill 3, Resident Evil movie franchise Live action and animated. 

I’m Zak Jockington, I love all things American, hanging out with the guys, pulling pranks and sports

Genre: Sports

Why?: He likes sports and there are a lot of sports films based in America and are American. There are also a lot of different genres for sport

Suggested films: Raging bull, Rocky, Million dollar baby

Clairey Effron here, Me and my girlfriends spend our time swooning over the latest teen heart throb and talking about boys we like.

Genre: Romance, Chic flicks

Why?: she likes to talk about boys with her friends and romances/ chic flicks have a lot of teenage heart throbs. That almost all girls  want to date

Suggested films: Fault in our stars, Titanic, D.U.F.F 

Zebb Hawkins’ the name, I enjoy collecting Star wars figurines and Silver Surfer comic books, I and am currently taking a monster stage-makeup class with my friends.

Genre: syfy fantasy, syfy fantasy action comic

Why?:The marvel universe which contains  the silver surfer is the syfy fantasy action comic and the syfy fantasy with star wars, also both theses genres have a lot of different types of stage makeup for monsters with all the aliens and monsters In it

Suggested films: Fantastic four silver surfer. The entire star wars anthology, entire marvel universe movies.

The next thing we had to do was take one of the things we like and stereotype ourselves with them e.g. Gamer,anime, film nerd.

I chose to do the gamer side of me which could be stereotyped as lazy and a bit of a geek.
The things that are media related to what  I would get if advertised are stuff like consoles , old retro games or JRPG's.



Media uses stereotypes to pull people in of that stereotype even if there not like the stereotype at all and are completely different from what they are portrayed as.


Stereotypes link into our short film when we need to think of our target audience and how our movie can appeal to them so people are more likely to watch it who like that genre
